Inise Tawaketini

Inise Tawaketini, Acting Head Teacher of Nasavusavu Special School, Fiji, has led inclusive education programs for students with disabilities since 2018. Prior to this, she taught at the Gospel School for the Deaf for over 15 years — where her journey as a passionate advocate for the Deaf and interest in sign language began.

She holds a Bachelor of Education in Special and Inclusive Education, a Postgraduate Diploma in Linguistics from the University of the South Pacific, and a Master of Arts in Linguistics (Sign Linguistics) from The Chinese University in Hong Kong.

She currently serves as the Regional Representative for WASLI Oceania, supporting interpreter development across Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, and Kiribati. She played a key role in the successful WASLI Oceania Training Program Launch in 2024 and co-designed the first-ever 26-week interpreter training program for Pacific Island Countries.

Her work is grounded in Christian values and guided by Proverbs 31:8–9: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” She believes that “true inclusion happens when every voice—spoken or signed—is heard, valued, and empowered,” and she works to ensure no one is left out of the conversation.

A passionate advocate for Deaf inclusion, linguistic rights, and accessible education, she brings to the conference a wealth of leadership experience and a deep commitment to regional collaboration. As Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much,” which underscores her belief in the power of working together across the Pacific to achieve true inclusion.
